Law enforcement in the Lone Star State will increase its presence on roads and enforce speed limits more strictly during "Operation Slowdown," according to TxDOT.

Operation Slowdown, launched on July 18 along with the "Be Safe. Drive Smart." speeding awareness campaign, urges drivers to slow down and drive to conditions to help save lives, TxDOT says.

Transportation officials said they are working with Texas law enforcement agencies across the state to step up enforcement of speed limits through Aug. 2, 2026.

In addition to writing more tickets, TxDOT said law enforcement vehicles will spend extra time driving the roads to "remind motorists what a safe speed looks like."

According to TxDOT, speeding played a role in more than 150,000 traffic crashes in Texas in 2025, resulting in 1,247 fatalities and 5,652 serious injuries.

TxDOT shares what drivers should know

Smart, safe driving means more than following the speed limit. TxDOT shared these safety tips for motorists:

  • Match your speed to traffic, weather, and road conditions
  • Increase following distance when traffic is heavy, or roads are slick
  • Watch for changing speed limits, especially in work zones and school zones
  • Remember that fines double for speeding in active work zones and school zones
  • Always buckle up—drivers and passengers—day and night. It's your best protection in a crash
